I noticed that platforms like Netflix, Facebook, Instagram and TikTok make us want to keep watching. Their secret is in doing specific things that release chemicals like Dopamine and Oxytocin in our brains - which, while I can barely pronounce them, means that our brains crave them more than ever.
But very few of of us get a big hit of excitement from writing and sending emails. No matter how many sales they can make us.
So we're going to change that...
Here's how I hijacked my brain chemistry to make me do what I need to do - and enjoy it.
There's just 3 simple things I've done - and that's meant I've sent an email every day for the past 10 years without the use of narcotics. Just by hacking the natural chemistry in everyone's brains (like Netflix does):
Reduced Thinking Friction
If you've ever suffered decision fatigue, this is for you. Basically, you stop deciding what you're going to promote at the same time as you're writing the email about it.
Spend 20-mins deciding what you're promoting each day of the month and then when it comes to writing your email, you just look at what you decided.
The coach plans the game before the whistle blows, right? It works. Do that.
Reward Your Mind
When your mind avoids doing something, it means there's another thing that's more rewarding that it wants instead. So let's make doing what we want to do more rewarding.
It's amazing what pleases our brains! Simply by checking off that you sent the email, and then seeing your own progress your brain will release happy chemicals.
You make this even better by gamifying it.
To do this, why not model the best? The New York Times bought that mega-addictive free game Wordle for more than a million dollars. What made it addictive? One thing. 'Streaks'.
Every day that you send an email without missing a day you are keeping your streak. You won't want to break your streak, so your brain will actually want to send the emails. Imagine feeling like you want to send emails more than anything? It changed me.
No More Blank Page
A fresh, blank email is scary AF. The temptation to just close the lid of the laptop is real.
Good news - we know what we're going to promote (step 1 above - thanks past me for planning that!)...but how do we start the email and what do we do next?
The fix for this is simple. There's a reason kids colour by numbers. It's easy.
So instead of just trying to squeeze out an email from scratch, have a list of prompts that lay out a framework for the email.
Now all you have to do is 'paint by numbers', filling in each section.
No blank page. No wondering what to start with, what to write next or how to end the email.
Since figuring this out, I've found writing emails easier, way more enjoyable and there's been some unexpected benefits:
I'm making more sales because I know what the hell I'm promoting in each email instead of making up as I go.
My emails are waaaaay more interesting because every time I follow a different framework, so I'm not getting bored writing them, and my open rates are up so people aren't getting bored reading them either.
By emailing more often, I'm getting better at writing the emails - which means I write them faster and they land better.
THE BIGGEST ONE: By emailing much more regularly I can quickly see which messaging my audience responds to best. I'm then improving all of my marketing by taking those winning angles and updating all of my sales pages, webinars and sales videos - kinda feels a bit like cheating.
